About the strategic partnership
Since 2017 the University of Tokyo has collaborated in a strategic partnership with Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Stockholm University, focused on advancing research, facilitating student and staff mobility, and enhancing faculty development.
Workshops and research exchanges
Every year, the partnership hosts an interdisciplinary workshop, rotating between the University of Tokyo, Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and Stockholm University. These workshops, held in-person or virtually, have addressed themes such as active ageing and sustainable development, promoting collaboration and knowledge exchange across institutions. Additionally, smaller, specialized workshops are organized to explore specific topics and deepen collaboration further.
To foster collaboration, calls for seed funding are issued at Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and Stockholm University to support lab visits and other types of exchanges for researchers and doctoral students. The partnership also facilitates student exchanges, group visits, and administrative staff exchanges to strengthen connections across institutions.
Established in 2017
The strategic partnership with the University of Tokyo marked the first strategic international partnership where Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and Stockholm University worked together to partner with another university. This collaboration contributed to the establishment of the Stockholm Trio University Alliance in 2019.

The strategic partnership agreement in 2017 was signed by Vice-Chancellor Ole-Petter Ottersen, Karolinska Institutet, Vice-Chancellor Sigbritt Karlsson, KTH, Vice-Chancellor Astrid Söderbergh Widding, Stockholm University, and Executive Vice President Masashi Haneda,University of Tokyo.
