Sweden needs to strengthen its preparations for the EU’s next long-term budget

The EU’s next long-term budget for 2028–2034 is expected to have major significance for Europe’s research, innovation and industrial policy. In the European Commission’s proposal, increased resources are proposed for research and innovation, alongside support for a more ambitious industrial policy. For Sweden, this brings both new opportunities and a need for clearer national coordination.
This was the starting point for a discussion during Almedalen Week on how Sweden can strengthen its position in the EU and better prepare for the changes expected in the EU’s long-term budget for 2028–2034.
A recurring question was how Swedish initiatives can be better linked to the EU’s priorities. For Sweden to be able to influence and benefit from the new opportunities emerging within the EU’s research, innovation and competitiveness policy, it needs both a clearer Swedish position in the EU and national preparations that strengthen the ability to act strategically.
The discussion in Almedalen highlighted the need to build on coalitions like Tech it Further through a broader national dialogue with decision-makers, academia, industry and other key actors.
