Ground for change
This project explores the conditions for the successful implementation of sustainability education in colleges and universities.
Background
To achieve the global goals of Agenda 2030, sustainable development must become a concern in all professions, and education on climate and sustainable development needs to be integrated into all levels of education. Teachers in professional education programs thus play a pivotal role in the transition to a sustainable society.
Currently, there is a lack of knowledge about how teachers themselves perceive the conditions for integrating climate and sustainability education into their teaching, both in terms of perceived importance and organizational and individual prerequisites for the task.
Method
Research Questions:
- How do teachers perceive the conditions for teaching about climate and sustainable development?
- What obstacles and opportunities do teachers see for integrating sustainability aspects into their teaching?
- What support (organizational and pedagogical) do teachers need to implement sustainability education?
To answer the research questions, six focus groups were conducted with teachers from programmes at Karolinska Institutet (KI) (N=approx 25).
Contribution to Agenda 2030
The insights gained will provide a better understanding of the challenges in implementing sustainability education in higher education and may lead to improved interventions to support teachers in contributing to global Goal 4.7: Education for sustainable development and global citizenship.
